Start with the report the recipient will accept

A background check in San Antonio can mean a Bexar felony check, misdemeanor case evidence, Texas personal review or an employer/licensing submission. Ask the requesting organization for the precise product, geographic scope, certification and delivery requirement first. Buying a local check because it is nearby does not make it valid for a different screening process.

A local felony search excludes the separate misdemeanor route and cannot establish nationwide clearance. Likewise, a Texas repository result covers information supplied by Texas agencies. If a recipient requires other states or federal information, have it identify the accepted process before spending on a county-only result.

Get the county check and supporting case records

Bexar Criminal Operations offers its county felony background check for $5, requested in person or by mail with payment enclosed. Public kiosks support on-site self-service searches. For assistance, call 210-335-2591. The District Clerk records page locates Criminal Filing at 101 W. Nueva Street, San Antonio, TX 78205.

If the recipient needs the underlying felony order, plain or certified copies cost $1 per page and are produced after payment. Copy requests can be made in person, by fax or mail; mailed payments must be cashier’s checks or money orders. Provide the name, cause number, document and certification choice and confirm the page count.

For a misdemeanor, select the County Clerk’s misdemeanor court-record route. Retain the court and case number and ask that office for the disposition required. Its separate Official Records database is not a substitute. County felony charges and payment instructions should not be applied to a County Clerk order.

Review your own Texas history through fingerprints

DPS’s personal-review instructions use service code 11FT12, with $15 for the record and $10 for FAST fingerprinting. Book through the link in CR-63 or 888-467-2080. Bring valid photo identification and the selected payment method. The instructions accept major cards, business checks, money orders and employer coupon codes; cash and personal checks are not accepted for this appointment.

The instructions permit results by mail or email and tell you to retain the receipt’s UE ID, especially for email access. Contact DPS within 14 days of fingerprinting if the results have not arrived. For out-of-state ink-card submission, follow CR-63’s vendor pre-enrollment, barcode authorization and mailing steps; obtaining the ink card can cost extra.

Use the employer or licensing agency’s service code

For an agency-directed FAST appointment, obtain that organization’s service code and any required agency identification number, bring valid ID and use the payment method selected at booking. Do not substitute the personal-review code merely because the same fingerprint provider is used. Confirm who receives the result and which state/federal checks the authorization requests.

DPS’s FACT Clearinghouse notice says the FBI portion of fingerprint submissions changed October 1, 2026 to $15, or $13 for FBI volunteer submissions. Those are federal components, not an all-in appointment quote. Agency-specific state fees and vendor charges may also apply. Confirm the current total in the authorized agency workflow rather than applying the personal-review price.

Keep your permission and report rights visible

When an employer uses a background reporting company, the FTC says it must provide a standalone written disclosure and get written permission. Before a negative decision based on the report, it must give you the report and a Summary of Rights. After the decision, it must identify the reporting company and explain your right to dispute errors and request another free report within 60 days.

Review the report promptly against your own records. Identify the disputed case, provide supporting documents, and ask the company to send corrections to the employer. A screening company’s report and the employer’s hiring decision have separate owners; explaining the decision belongs with the employer.

Correct the source and verify that the needed result arrived

DPS directs Texas-history corrections to its Error Resolution Unit with certified supporting documents; email [email protected] for the appropriate procedure. Its page separates identity misuse from ordinary record errors. A county disposition can supply evidence of how a case ended, but changing a state record does not automatically correct an unrelated commercial report.

Keep the request receipt, exact screening scope and recipient instructions. Confirm whether the delivered result is a local search, certified court document or fingerprint review, and whether the recipient actually accepts it. If a county copy or a fingerprint response is delayed, use that service’s contact and reference number rather than purchasing the same mismatched product again.
